August 2 is Lughnasadh, the festival starting of the Harvest Season in the Celtic Tradition. The word means the funeral games of Lugh, the Sun God; but it is not his funeral being celebrated. It is to honor his Foster Mother Taltiu, Wife of the last of the High Kings of the Firbolg. Taltiu survived the Invasion of the Tuatha Dé Danann and died of exhaustion after clearing the land of Eire for agriculture. Celtic stories and the first fruits of the garden are accordingly welcome at the picnic. August 2 is called Lammas in the English speaking world. It too is a celebration of the first fruits of the Harvest, in particular Wheat. So home made baked goods and English Stories are equally Welcome. Feel free to stretch the rules for gluten free substitutes for wheat!
